Roger Statham
Consultant and writer on probation & former Chief Officer Teesside Probation

Roger has had a distinguished 40 year career in Probation. He was Chief Officer of Teesside Probation for 12 years and then went on to act as advisor to the Home Office and HM Inspectorate of Probation. As well as working in justice, he has also been active in the health sector, having been a member of Tees Health Partnerships Board, advising a NHS Public Enquiry and acting as NHS Chair Continuing Care Panels. He played a key role in supporting the development of management capability and performance in probation. He is a keen writer and presenter on probation, having had three books published as well as a range of papers.

His most recent book, ‘The Golden Age of Probation’ is a collection of essays by people closely involved in probation over the last fifty years. The book provides a lasting insight both into probation practice and the changing political environment.

“It is essential that the culture of probation is preserved, particularly in the present era of fragmentation. Probation has always stood for justice and fairness and the Probation Institute will continue to promote these values.”
