In September 2024, the Probation Institute held a Research Event at which Drs. Jenni Ward (Middlesex University) and Jake Phillips (University of Cambridge), presented the findings from an evaluation of the Newham Youth to Adulthood (Y2A) Probation Hub pilot.
The evaluation identified key components necessary for an effective young adult probation model, including a welcoming environment; a committed workforce trained and motivated to work with young adults; trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches; and processes that engage young adults and celebrate their achievements.
The Probation Institute is delighted to host, on 1st October, the research team as they launch the Young Adult Probation Hub Toolkit. The toolkit has emerged from the Newham evaluation and is co-produced with senior probation managers from HMPPS Yorkshire and the Humber, who have adapted the model for implementation in Leeds and the Yorkshire area.
The toolkit is intended as a guide for probation leaders and managers interested in developing tailored young adult probation and will be of interest to policy-makers, probation practitioners and partner agencies whose work intersects with probation, including the police, courts, prisons, Youth Offending Services, statutory health and safeguarding services, leaving care teams, women's services, and third-sector organisations.
