Probation Institute Professional Discussion Group meetings

Here are the dates and topics for the Probation Institute Professional Discussion Group meetings in April and May. We hope you will join where possible and we look forward to seeing you.

Thursday 11th April, 12.00pm to 1.00pm
Jo Thompson, Trustee of the Probation Institute, will lead a discussion about probation and parole. Jo was appointed to the Parole Board in 2010, having spent 2 years seconded from the Probation Service as the lead on Quality Assurance in the Parole Board Secretariat. Prior to that Jo was seconded to the Home Office/Ministry of Justice from 2003 to 2008 working in the Public Protection Unit on the development of the MAPPA nationally and the implementation/training for Probation of the IPP sentence and the CJA Act 2003, and later in NOMS on recall policy.

Thursday 2nd May, 12.00pm to 1.00pm
Professor Nicola Padfield will lead a discussion on why the number of prisoners recalled has risen as it has, exploring law and practice in relation to both indeterminate and determinate sentences.  Nicky has been studying the subject for many years: see for example Padfield and Maruna (2006) ‘The revolving door at the prison gate: Exploring the dramatic increase in recalls to prison’, Criminology & Criminal Justice, 6(3), 329-352. https://doi.org/10.1177/1748895806065534, and her Understanding Recall (2011) at https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2201039
