Loraine Gelshorpe
Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice and Director of the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge

After a first degree at Sussex University, and a brief career in social work, she studied Criminology at the University of Cambridge, and although offered a probation post in Bristol, stayed on in Cambridge to do a PhD instead, thinking that a career in probation would follow. This never quite happened, but research interests have revolved around community penalties, women and criminal justice, and discretion in criminal justice system decision-making. She is currently an academic Advisor to the Chief Inspector of Probation and sits on other national advisory bodies too. She is a trustee of Pembroke House, Walworth, which is a charity in south London which runs over 30 different community, well-being, arts and education projects. Loraine has published widely on a range of criminal justice issues. (She edited the Handbook of Probation with Rod Morgan in 2007, Willan publishing).
